Ugly Mugs

This art project is inspired by the artist Jim McDowell, who in turn was inspired by his own ancestors who were artists. The tradition of face jugs is known to us through the oral history which is passed down through generations of families like that of Jim McDowell's ancestors. This is an interdisciplinary lesson that connects with what students are learning in Social Studies. At the end of the project our assessment and art critique are accompanied by a hot chocolate party to test out the functionality of our mugs.
